Fully engulfed on arrival

A seafood warehouse burned down about an hour from our office last week.

Texas Gulf Seafood, on Pier 7 in Galveston, at around 8:40 on the evening of Wednesday 5 August. Firefighters arrived to find the building already fully engulfed. Crews made an interior attack and pulled back when the roof came down. Three people and a dog got out. One firefighter was treated for dehydration and released. Departments from across Galveston County worked it overnight before it was contained.

The cause is still under investigation.

The detail worth sitting with

The phrase that stayed with me is not dramatic. It is procedural.

Fully engulfed on arrival.

That was a family business built over roughly thirty years. By the time the first truck pulled up, the outcome had already been settled. Everything after that point was containment and salvage, not prevention.

Somewhere between ignition and that first truck, there was a window. Nobody knows yet how long it was. But for all of it, the building was still standing.

That window is the interesting part, and it is not unique to this fire. It exists on nearly every industrial site, and it is almost always unobserved.

What cameras are actually asked to do

Walk any warehouse, port facility or distribution center and you will find cameras everywhere. Good ones, often recently upgraded, recording continuously to a VMS that somebody pays real money to maintain.

Now ask what question that footage is expected to answer.

Almost always, a retrospective one. What happened. When did it start. Who was on site. Which racking was where. What was in the building for insurance purposes. Those are reasonable questions and the footage answers them well.

There is a different question that a camera is almost never asked, because nobody is watching at 8:40 on a Wednesday night.

Is something wrong right now.

Smoke is visible before flame

This is the specific thing that makes video useful in a fire timeline, and it is worth being precise about rather than overselling.

A conventional fire panel is a threshold device. A heat detector waits for temperature at the sensor to cross a limit. A smoke detector waits for particles to reach the chamber. Both are excellent, both are code required, and both depend on the event reaching the sensor's physical location.

A camera has a different relationship with the room. Haze and smoke drift are visible across an open bay well before either threshold is crossed at any particular point on the ceiling. And a camera covers the corners where nobody ever ran conduit for a sensor, because it was installed to watch a loading door, not to watch for fire.

DHI's smoke and haze detection runs on those existing cameras. It does not replace a fire panel and we would not position it that way. It is a different sensor with different physics, producing an additional signal, potentially minutes earlier, routed to a person who can walk over rather than to a hard drive that will be reviewed later.

What we are not saying

Being clear about scope matters more than usual here.

The cause of the Galveston fire is publicly unknown. We have no information about ignition source, and nothing in this post should be read as a claim about what would or would not have changed that specific night. Some fires develop over long, visible, smoky minutes. Others do not. Any vendor asserting a counterfactual about an incident still under investigation is guessing.

What is general, and defensible, is the shape of the timeline. On most industrial sites, the interval between something beginning to go wrong and somebody with authority learning about it is measured in whatever happens to catch a human eye. That interval is longer at night, longer in a low traffic bay, and longer in a building where the cameras are recording rather than watching.

The uncomfortable part of retrospective video

If there is a lesson worth taking from any warehouse fire, it is probably this one.

The footage almost always exists. Sites rarely discover afterwards that they had no visibility. They discover that they had complete visibility, recorded in high definition, timestamped, retained, and reviewed for the first time by an investigator.

That is a strange place for a safety program to end up, and it is not anyone's fault. It is just what happens when a camera network is procured as an evidence system and never repurposed as an attention system.

The cameras are already in the building. Fire protection is one of the five hazards OSHA's renewed warehousing emphasis program still targets. Turning some fraction of that existing coverage into something that can raise its hand during the window, rather than describe the window afterwards, is not a large capital project.

Three people and a dog got out of that building in Galveston. A thirty year old family business did not.
